In January, there were many exciting electronic consumer products from various manufacturers showcasing their latest offerings at CES (International Consumer Electronics Show) 2023. However, what caught my attention the most was a gaming laptop featuring

This article is part 1 of the "MECHREVO Kuangshi X GM7PX9N Review" series, featuring over 4,000 words and nearly 50 images. The Chinese version will be launched on the "Fair Reviews Chinese Site", and the English version will be released on the "FairReviews English Site" at a later time.

## Lying in the middle of the night listening to the wind and rain

The End of COVID-19 - A Spring of Hope

In January 2023, the CES conference showcased a range of exciting latest electronic consumer products from various manufacturers. As a notebook enthusiast and independent digital review creator, I am most interested in gaming notebooks equipped with Intel's latest 13th-generation mobile processors and the latest mobile GPU from nVIDIA's 40 series.

After the Chinese New Year, the epidemic caused by the new crown virus greatly improved in China, and economic activity across all sectors returned to its original levels. The IT digital industry also met a spring full of hope. The new generation of gaming notebooks showcased by various manufacturers at CES finally announced that they will be officially launched on February 8, which make me excited and eagerly anticipating it.

Since I am busy during the day and have no free time, so I use my mobile phone to collect product configuration information from official websites, e-commerce platforms, and major brand sellers at night when I am resting in bed. At the same time, I lie there and was listening to the cold rain outside and feeling the cold wind gusts. It reminded me of a scene from an ancient Chinese poem "Lying in the night and listening to the wind and rain", which inspired me to use it as the title for this section.

After collecting information, I discovered the initial pricing for notebooks with RTX 4090 graphics cards are as follows:

Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 ¥26999;

Asus ROG Strix G18 ¥21999.

MECHREVO Kuangshi X GM7PX9N ¥24999;

Colorful Star X17 Pro Max  ¥26000;

Machenike Model Light 16 Pro¥29999;

Raytheon ZERO 2023 ¥32999;

Razer Blade 18  ¥37000;

MSI GT77HX after prepayment of 200 deposit is ¥39899!

As for the Alienware M18, I never even considered it. It is definitely the most expensive option available.

Listening to the sound of the wind and rain night after night, after a week of research and pre-sale appointments, I finally found some things through comprehensive comparison.

The notebooks that can be guaranteed to be bought now are basically expensive.

However, Asus ROG Strix Scar 18, which has a better brand reputation and is affordable, is not easy to ensure a successful snap-up due to its popularity. As of February 6, the author initially estimated that the number of reservations on various platforms was close to 100,000 because of its good price.

In the end, to secure a suitable machine quickly, I got a MECHREVO Kuangshi X GM7PX9N with the help of a mysterious business friend, and no breaking the official release date ----because I hope the review is based on the perspective of a real end user, rather than using an engineering version provided by the manufacturer in advance

Why choose the product from MECHREVO?

There are two main points:

First, in my current situation, as a normal end-user, I ensure that this notebook meets the requirements and it is the only one I get at the first time;

Secondly, as an enthusiast for a notebook for more than 20 years, I have had a positive impression of MECHREVO in the past two years.

There are exactly two reasons for its good impression:

One of the reasons is because of the name. The literal translation of MECHREVO's Chinese name is "Mechanical Revolution". With over 20 years of experience using laptops and witnessing the evolution since Toshiba and IBM started the field of notebook computers, from military to commercial to consumer products, as well as the modern society where smartphones are popular, it seems like a time for a "revolution" in the laptop world.

The second reason will be explained at the end of the full text but not for now.

## Dreaming of riding the destrier across a glacier

On the morning of February 9, 2023, the SF Express delivered the MECHREVO Kuangshi X GM7PX9N from the logistics warehouse in Shaanxi Province, China to the delivery address in Hunan Province (a journey of about 850 km), so I started to unpack it.

102.jpg

The outer box of "Kuangshi X"(MECHREVO Kuangshi X GM7PX9N) has the same style as the products of this brand I have tested before a brown outer box, and the front is the brand's name with a big bold English word "MECHREVO", in which the letter O is replaced by Logo.

103.JPG

On the left side, there are some shipping and details labels, showing the information of this Kuangshi X:

Product model: MECHREVO Kuangshi X GM7PX9N

Model Code: i9 4090 Huimiezhe

Product number: 5000015484

Material number: FGM/FGB-GM7PX9N0125202

Specification: II9139064G000GPNNSGB00

Production date: January 18, 2023

Gross weight: about 5.0KG

There is also a barcode and serial number on the label.

104.JPG

The back of the box also features the MECHREVO name in large bold letters.

On the top left corner, there is the "China Energy Label" - a labeling system used in China for indicating the energy efficiency of various products. It has a typical energy consumption value of 237.5 kWh.

On the right side of the outer box (left in the following image), there is an SDoC label with a white background and green icon.

105.JPG

Open the box, there is a black inner box with black cushioning foam on the four corners, and the center of the upper cover has the logo of MECHREVO inlaid with gold.

Re-106.jpg

At the bottom of the black inner box, in addition to the same product details label as the outer box, there is also a label showing "Intel inside".

There are also printed white characters in one corner, detailing the relevant information of the MECHREVO official (Tongfang Co., Ltd.) and the manufacturer (Tongfang International Suzhou Company).

Re-107.jpg

The inner box is in a box set format. After removing a piece of black cushioning foam on the surface, a black non-woven packaging with a white MECHREVO logo is revealed. The protagonist of this notebook review - the Kuangshi X notebook - is in this package.

Re-108.jpg

After removing the Kuangshi X wrapped in black non-woven fabric, there are two accessory storage compartments under the inner box.

Re-109.jpg

The power adapter, packed in a plastic bag, is placed on the left, and the papers and power cord, packed in a plastic bag, are placed on the right.

The plastic bags have all been removed from the shot for a better photo.

Re-110.jpg

The top of the image shows the power adapter of the Kuangshi X, and the bottom shows the 330W adapter produced by Delta Electronics that has been used in many models for many years. Comparing these two adapters, the size of the Kuangshi X adapter is slightly smaller, but there is no obvious difference in weight between the two.

Re-111.jpg

The power adapter of Kuangshi X also has an output power marked as 330 watts. It is produced by Chicony, the model is A20-330P1A, the output is DC 19.5V-16.92A, and it is produced in January 2023.

Re-112.jpg

There is also a paper foldout manual. The instructions, the warranty certificate, and the san-bao certificate are combined into one. (san-bao certificate is the "Three Guarantees Certificate". It is a document that serves as proof of the three rights, return, repair, and replacement, that consumers are entitled to)

Re-113.jpg

There are some red words on it to remind: This warranty certificate is used together with the purchase invoice and the three-guarantee certificate. That means it may better to keep this manual properly for warranty use.

Taking it out of the non-woven bag, the protagonist's notebook, KuangshiX, finally appeared.

the front cover of the device is iron-gray (officially called "interstellar gray"), and the rear edge of the fuselage is black.

The upper part of the center of the front cover is marking a MECHREVO logo.

Re-114.jpg

Looking at it from another direction, the iron-gray front cover shows an obvious metallic texture, which seems to be a matte surface treatment, but it is very silky when touched by hand. According to official information, its material is an anodized aluminum alloy.

Re-115.jpg

Meticulously looking at the logo of MECHREVO on the notebook --- the design abstracts the last letter "O" of the name "MECHREVO" into a hexagonal nut, and the central internal thread is abstracted into a lightning bolt- --- And I found that the area of the lightning bolt will always show a red sheen, while other parts will change the color with the lighting and angle.

The official description of this is: "Techniques to create a highly reflective, mirror-like colorful finish on the surface, luminous lightning bolt like the sun echoes the coastline at the end of the front cover.". Then I found that the red lightning will still glow after turning on the machine. Of course, this is part of the RGB lighting that most gaming users like.

Re-116.jpg

The front cover of Kuangshi X without opening is as follows, the thickness comparison phone placed on the left is Hammer Nut R1 (7.9mm);

The dimensions of the Kuangshi X are 383.5 x 272.35 x 27.35mm.

Re-117.jpg

From the rearview, you can see in detail the connection between the screen cover and the base, which is designed in three sections. With the rotating shaft in the center and a slight curvature on both sides, chamfers appear when reaching the edge.

From left to right at the rear of the notebook are:

- Radiator grille;

- Water cooling inlet/outlet port;

- Thunderbolt 4 port

- HDMI 2.1 port

- power port;

- Radiator grille.

Re-118.jpg

The left view of the fuselage, from left to right:

- Radiator grille;

- Security lock slot

- USB-A 3.1 Gen 2 port

- 3.5mm headphone and microphone ports --- there are no signs on these two ports so they cannot be distinguished in appearance without trying.

Re-119.jpg

The right view of the fuselage, from left to right:

- SD card reader port

- Two USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 ports

- Radiator grille.

Re-120.jpg

The bottom of Kuangshi X is also iron gray, with a thick gray silicone foot pad at each corner. The bottom material is also an anodized aluminum alloy. The shape of this bottom surface is relatively rare. It is a design with an uneven shape but a symmetrical axis.

Re-121.jpg

From the front to the back of the notebook, three planes of different heights appear on the bottom extension, increasing layer by layer. This should be an optimized design for the bottom air intake. I will discuss this further in the dismantling part later, so just skip this content here for the time being.

Re-122.jpg

Relevant information is printed on the bottom center of the machine near the rear. The serial number is in the form of a QR code, allowing users to query it by scanning. This is a very user-friendly and convenient approach.

In addition, the scientific name of the notebook computer is more interesting, called "portable micro-computer".

Re-123.jpg

On the bottom of the Kuangshi X, I don't find the usual emergency reset button or reset jack for laptops with built-in batteries.

So I am going to ask the official technical support member to determine whether there is really no reset button. If there really is no, I'm a bit curious why the manufacturer has the confidence to make such a design?

Re-124.jpg

Open the top cover of the laptop, and you can see that the keyboard is covered with a black non-woven fabric to protect the possible extrusion between the keyboard and the screen during shipping.

Re-125.jpg

After removing the fabric, the front view of Kuangshi X is as follows:

Re-126.jpg

The screen of Kuangshi X is relatively rare in the market. It is a 17-inch 16:10 ratio screen. The left and right sides of the screen frame are very narrow, and the screen-to-body ratio reaches 90%.

Re-127.jpg

Above the screen are a conventional camera, an infrared camera, and some microphones. This device supports Windows-Hello face recognition.

Re-128.jpg

The bezels below the screen are also narrower. It uses a central screen axis to connect with the base of the fuselage.

The nVIDIA G-SYNC logo is pasted on the lower right, indicating that this screen supports G-Sync.

Re-129.jpg

Due to the limitation of the screen shaft design, the screen cannot be unfolded at 180 degrees, but at most 135 degrees, as shown in the image below:

Re-130.jpg

As a gaming notebook, it seems that there are very few scenes where the screen is displayed to customers in the opposite position, or the scene is used notebook and standing up. So the maximum angle of the screen is designed to be only 135 degrees, which seems to be no problem.

But why not do it if it can be better with 180 degrees?

Re-131.jpg

Kuangshi X's keyboard display is shown below, and the most attractive thing should be its large touchpad.

Re-132.jpg

The touchpad is covered with a transparent plastic film when it leaves the factory. There is a white dividing line in the center of the film, and the illustration is on the left and right.

Re-133.jpg

Click the white marked point in the upper left corner of the touchpad to turn off or enable the touchpad ----- the main scenario is that the game player connects an external mouse and disables the touchpad to play games, in case the hands for keyboard operations are accidentally touched the touchpad.

Click the white marked point in the upper right corner of the touchpad to switch the operating area of the touchpad to all or left-half. After the operating area of the touchpad is set to left-half, the operating area is just located on the central axis of the main keyboards. This setting can be more friendly to long-term keyboard input and can ensure a more natural operation. After all, some operations do not mean that the larger the touchpad area may be better.

Re-134.jpg

There is only an orange Nahimic by SteelSeries label in the lower left area of the Kuangshi X keyboard side, declaring that this device has passed the Nahimic sound certification with the immersive sound effects.

Re-135.jpg

Three labels are in the lower right area, namely Microsoft Windows, nVIDIA GeForce, and Intel Core. These labels indicate that the device is pre-installed with genuine Windows 11, and uses the latest hardware from nVIDIA and intel.

On the upper right of the keyboard, there are two buttons here. The right one is the power button, the left one is the performance mode switch button, and the sticker next to it is marked, which can be freely switched among the four modes of "office", "balance", "berserk" and "custom".

Re-136.jpg

The keyboard layout of the Kuangshi X is a six-row layout with a numeric keypad.

The key spacing of the keyboard is relatively wide, and the four direction keys are all full height, not reduced to half one. This is the normal design that the game is supposed to do.

The official claims that the mechanical keyboard with a CHERRY axis supports single-key color adjustment. The feeling of clicking the keyboard and the RGB lighting will only be known after the actual use of power-on.

It should be noted that some keys on the keyboard are not in standard positions. For example, the up key of the arrow key actually occupies part of the space of the right Shift key. In addition, the right button of the arrow keys also occupies part of the space of the numeric keypad. For new users, it may take some time to get used to.

Re-137.jpg

So far, the unpacking process and appearance of Kuangshi X have been introduced.

As far as the current static review is concerned, my conclusions on the first part are as follows:

The Kuangshi X are fully packaged and safe to transport. The internal packaging is neither simple nor luxurious. It has all the attachments that should be included, giving people an approachable style experience.

The port types of Kuangshi X are relatively diverse. The common ports are basically covered. The quantity and layout are acceptable. Its appearance looks tougher. The device is mainly made of iron-gray alloy material, which feels very silky to the touch, like a war horse in gray iron armor.

Re-138.jpg

The base of the Kuangshi X is rigid enough.

I used two hands to press the diagonal position of the base of the fuselage, exerting force, and trying to twist the notebook. But Kuangshi X is like a quiet and gentle girl, without any deformation or abnormal noise at all. This shows that the body base is very rigid, which is a great advantage for game users.

The front cover of Kuangshi X is comfortable to open.

Thanks to its hefty base, the screen lid can be opened with just one hand. The damping is appropriate and very smooth during the process. Even if I open or close to any angle and then stop, the notebook is very stable and there is no shaking from the screen.

Re-139.jpg

The size and weight of Kuangshi X also exceed most notebooks.

The three-dimensional size is 383.5 x 272.35 x 27.35mm, and the weight is 2.5kg. As far as the current human technology is concerned, Kuangshi X, a high-performance gaming notebook with a 17-inch screen, is fully confident and unafraid to stand out. It is not to fall behind others. I've always liked high-performance notebooks and this notebook is like a mid-sized battleship.

Re-140.jpg

However, there is no absolute perfection in this world, and nor does Kuangshi X.

The first point is about the abnormal sound of distortion.

When I exerted great force on the screen cover to twist it, I found that there was an abnormal sound at the bottom right side of the screen. I checked carefully and found no obvious physical deformation or gaps. Perhaps this is because the screen hinge is designed in the middle, so when some parts are twisted, there will be deformation inside, causing a squeeze and friction sound. I can only make some guesses.

In other words, this may not be a design issue, but a production assembly and quality control problem, so this is just a case of one single product. But it is unknown and just another conjecture.

Re-141.jpg

The second point is the location of the power port.

The power port of Kuangshi X is located on the rear side of the fuselage. The power output cable uses an L-shaped connector and at the same time, it is very thick. The combination of these three factors has formed the following dilemma:

As shown in the image below, when the power is placed on the left side of the fuselage for use, the power output line will pass through the left side at the rear of the fuselage. It is blocking part of the airflow and affects heat dissipation. The temperature of the power cord will rise as well.

Re-142.jpg

As shown in the image below, when the power supply is placed on the right side of the fuselage, the power output cable will pass through the left outlet at the rear of the fuselage, and at the same time block the HDMI, Thunderbolt 4 and water-cooling ports.

Re-143.jpg

Therefore, a relatively good way to place the power supply can only be as shown in the following image:

I twisted the output wires with the power supply in the middle. However, a new problem arises again. The connector on the power output cable is L-shaped, and the power cable is very thick and not easy to twist. If the device is moved for a small amount after being plugged in for a long time, the power connector may drop off from the notebook.

Therefore, if the connector of the power line is changed to "I" type, or even with magnetic adsorption, is it much better?

Re-144.jpg

The third point is still about the ports.

As shown before in this review -- "The common ports are basically covered. The quantity and layout are acceptable."

In fact, the use of the word "acceptable" means that I am euphemistically saying that there are deficiencies here.

That is only one Thunderbolt 4 port.

Apart from the only Thunderbolt 4 port, Kuangshi X does not have any other video output type C port or DP port. So if users want to use DP output, USB-C devices, and Thunderbolt 4 interface devices at the same time, they will definitely feel the pain.

Re-145.jpg

In summary, I think:

This Kuangshi X, under the current simple static review, is a good destrier without any major defect, but some details are not perfect.

Whether the knight rides on this warhorse to charge and win depends on the following chapters --- the dynamic tests related to performance will be carried out in the follow-up.

Re-146.jpg

Glacier: a frozen cold river

Destrier is charging. But where is the glacier?

Glacier is the official water-cooling equipment for Kuangshi X --- the second-generation "Glacier Water-cooling Machine"

Re-147.jpg

I asked the relevant sales of the store, and the reply I got was:

This cooling machine is not yet on the shelves, and the release date is unknown.

This seems to be temporarily unavailable, so I can just only wait?

Re-148.jpg

Of course, I can't wait passively, it doesn't fit the style of this year, the traditional Chinese Year of the Rabbit. I am not a man waiting for good luck or success to come to them without taking any action. Just like a Chinese idiom related to rabbits that literally translates to "waiting by a tree stump for rabbits". I can't wait passively.

So I took the initiative, and eventually got in touch with the MECHREVO officials. Then I borrowed a "Glacier Water-cooling Machine". This is expected to take a week of express time, and I will introduce this device in follow-up articles.

Of course, I will definitely use it in the dynamic performance tests of Kuangshi X.

So, the delivery is coming soon, I am dreaming of this warhorse-like "Destrier Notebook Kuangshi X", with this "Glacier Water-cooling Machine" fighting on the battlefield.

This is the romantic meaning of the title "Dreaming of riding the destrier across a glacier"
